School Days

When I was in graduate school in the 90s, I went junking with a fellow artist. I purchased a couple of realms of kids’ paper for practicing handwriting.

I used several sheets to make signatures to try a new book format. Bamboo yarn was used to tie the signatures together.

The front and back covers were made of blank flash cards.

A band of the flash card paper was used to secure the book. Rather than glue or stitchwork, I used a round head fastener.

I wrote and erased School Days on the cover.

Text

Yep, that is a Dixon Beginners pencil.

Macrame knots were used to bind the tails together.

I learned three things making this little book: a new binding technique, addition of macrame, and how to make a wrap closure.

Made most of the rusty paper by cutting a long strip of cream packing paper and binding with 3/4″ safety pins. Applied a solution of white vinegar, peroxide and salt. The paper does become fragile and a challenge to embroider.

The quote is from Mirrored Time (A Time Archivist Novel Book ) by J.D. Faulkner.

I realized how true the quote was as I sat next to my mother’s bed after an ischemic stroke and my sister’s hospital bed post surgery. I knew neither would survive, but a bit of me hoped everyone was wrong. That my family would be whole again.

Rust on Paper Test

It is easy peasy to make red /brown rust, but green, blue, and grey and a little tricky. Not all wire that appears to be copper works. Not all copper coated wire works.

I used a copper garden mesh that is meant to keep varmints and wormy guys away from plants. I purchased a box of the mesh years ago, but it was too thin to use as a base for embroidery.

The paper is the green mask paper typically used for house painting. I cut a long strip, accordion folded triangles, and inserted a hair pin in every crease. The result was areas of pale brown to pink with large splotches of the original green.

Today I replaced the hairpins (two holes for them to slide through) and sandwiched the paper between layers of the copper mesh. Wrapped the lot with a cotton cord. 12:33pm
